Tales until dawn : the world of a Cape Breton Gaelic story-teller

MacNeil, Joe Neil, 1908-1987
Books, Manuscripts
MacNeil is a Scottish Gaelic speaker living in North America's only gaidhealtachd, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. John Shaw has collected and translated into English from MacNeil's oral recitation some 51 folktales plus legends, reminiscences, jokes, proverbs, rhymes, games, and assorted other folklore, all superbly introduced and thoroughly annotated. The book is the finest collection of a single repertory of any Scottish Gaelic speaker. It is a tribute to the Cape Breton community in which MacNeil and Shaw live and which provided the traditions that MacNeil carries and Shaw has preserved.
