The Second World War has brought the peril of bombing to London. Carrie Willow and her younger brother Ncik find themselves evacuated to the Welsh countryside where they are housed with a strict churchgoing shopkeeper, Mr Evans and his younger sister. They soon find themselves swept up, however, in the more enticing world of Mr Evans's older sister, the extraordinary recluse Mrs Gotobed, her housekeeper Hepzibah and her son Mr Johnny.
