In 1966, Richard Goldstein became the first person to write about rock music in a major publication. From his unique position he saw the full arc of events that shaped culture and politics in the 1960s. He met Andy Warhol, got stoned with Brian Wilson, witnessed Martin Luther King's 'I Have a Dream' speech, was challenged to a boxing match by Norman Mailer and took Susan Sontag to her first disco. Goldstein also developed close relationships with rock legends Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, whose early deaths came as a wrenching shock.
