Laurie Lee crossed the Pyrenees from France in 1937 to fight against the Fascists in the Spanish Civil War. He had been in Spain when the war had broken out a few months earlier, and had been lifted off an Andalusian beach by a British destroyer. Now his conscience and his desire for action brought him back.
