With his newly widowed mother in Edinburgh until Sunday evening, 18-year-old Patrick Hunter is on his own in tiny Blackden. His only obligations are assisting his auctioneer boss at an estate sale Saturday morning and taking a meal to his grandparents. The weekend starts inauspiciously with a tiff with his best friend. Slightly later, fortune seemingly smiles in a could-be come-on from a young woman. But then Patrick lurches from one tiny disaster to another, beginning with his bike being accidentally sold at the auction and ending in an outdoor stakeout, in freezing weather, of his should-have-been inamorata's all-night date with a local hooligan.
