Orkney book collectors prize a copy of B.H. Hossack's Kirkwall in the Orkneys. It is a monumental tome, detailing the history of the Royal Burgh until around 1900, street by street, building by building and describes key personalities and events. Kirkwall follows in Hossack's footsteps and charts the town's development, primarily from 1900 to 2000. G.D. Partner uses the same methodology to construct a picture of how Kirkwall and its citizens have evolved over the years. He reveals the origin of street names, the history of local businesses and describes a few of the characters who have added colour to "the Street".
