James Clerk Maxwell is to science in Scotland as Burns is to poetry, regarded with Newton and Einstein as one of the greatest physicists of all time. The International Year of Light in 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of his electromagnetic theory of light on which much of modern physics is built - from radio waves to relativity, the Higgs field, and the theory of gases. He also showed Saturn's rings are made of rocks, and took the first colour photograph - all in a life of only 48 years. Born in Edinburgh in 1831, he grew up in Galloway, and later carried out some of his work at home at Glenlair. He was descended from the Clerks of Penicuik, a brilliantly talented family which included the composer Sir John Clerk. One of Maxwell's ancestors was the poer Sir William Drummond of Hawthornden. Maxwell himself wrote poetry and songs, sometimes romantic, sometimes mystical, sometimes humorous. For this compilation, musicians in Scotland and Slovenia have produced tunes for some of his poems, honouring a man who could travel into territory few others could explore and was at the same time a gentle and warm-hearted man.
