A Lerwick lifeboatman's story

Leith, George1993
Books, Manuscripts
George Leith never forgot the day the first Lerwick lifeboat arrived in Shetland when his father took him down to the pier for a trip round the harbour on the Lady Jane and Martha Ryland. Nineteen years later he was on the pier when the lifeboat was called out to a vessel in distress. The crew was a man short so the coxswain called for a volunteer. George Leith jumped on board and so began his 30 years' service a coxswain. The history of the Lerwick lifeboat station, the lifeboats, the dedicated crews, the personalities, courageous rescues and numerous other incidents - some funny, some sad - have been recorded by George Leith together with many personal recellections. George Leith died in 1992 shortly after completeing the manuscript for this book.
