This volume is the 2nd edition of a reprint of two major naval reference works that were published by the HMSO in 1947. It also contains additional material to help the reader put the events into their historical perspective. The main information is presented in tabular form for ease of reference. Section I, which is devoted to the Royal Navy, gives the following data on warships and auxiliary vessels: class, name, tonnage, date of completion, date of loss, and how lost and where, while there is also a feature on landing ships, craft and barges. In the second section, similar information is given on merchant and fishing vessels, together with a list of vessels that were damaged by enemy action but not lost, and a brief summary of casualties to personnel of British merchant ships.
