This novel is set in the heady summer days of post-World War Two Gloucestershire. Yanto, invalided out of the Army towards the end of the war, has recovered and is working on the docks. Although he enjoys civilian life, he misses the thrill and risk of war, and has to readjust to a sedate life of the local pub, fishing, and 'going steady' with his new girlfriend. However, things don't stay that way for long, as Yanto's old flame from before the war returns to his village.
