Buildings of St Kilda

Stell, Geoffrey1988
Books, Manuscripts
This book is dedicated to the buildings and antiquities of the islands of the St Kilda group and is the result of a detailed survey of the main areas of human settlement, mainly confined to the last three centuries. The chief concern is with the buildings dating from this period - particularly the archaic cellular structures, the black houses and cleitean (storehouses) - which reflect faithfully the islanders' distinctive way of life. Descriptions of the buildings and settlement patterns in the village and Gleann Mor, together with some of the fixtures and fittings that can now be found in museums, build up a picture of how life must have been in this isolated island community
