Using both Scottish and Charleston historical records this study aims to identify Scots merchants doing business in Charleston as well as the merchants in Scotland with whom they traded. The study considers who were the Scottish merchants trading in Charleston during the colonial period, identifies what products they were handling, the markets they participated in, and how the trade was organised within Charleston specifically and in South Carolina generally. It also looks to where Scots merchants were located in colonial South Carolina, if they were operating as international merchants based in Charleston or if they were Indian traders in the backwoods of the region. The particular occupations of those settling in South Carolina is discussed and the activities of these factors, importers, exporters, wholesalers and retailers examined. Aspects such as marketing, finance and networking are also examined.
